As they say, “necessity is the mother of invention”—and the development of SimpleCoat® certainly follows this old adage.
Owning a boat with a black hull, Dr. Scott Hinton was frustrated by the endless cleaning and waxing necessary to remove surface oxidation and restore shine—no product worked effectively long-term while being easy to use and environmentally conscious. He knew there had to be a better way...and so began a ten-year quest for a solution.
A LABOR OF LOVE AND SCIENCE
Dr. Hinton knew his dream product had to live up to three high standards:
- It had to be super easy to apply: simply wiped on with no prior cleaning, buffing or use of special tools or techniques.
- It had to be effective, restoring shine and providing long-lasting protection.
- It had to be safe, not only for the user, but for the natural environment.
Referencing a wealth of technical information from his career in chemical engineering and good old-fashioned trial and error, Dr. Hinton finally arrived at a formulation that nearly fit the bill. Unfortunately, while the formulation provided a terrific, quick fix to the boat hull problem and made even severely distressed waxed surfaces look glossy and new, it didn’t provide the “perfect,” shiny, mirror-like finish he was looking for. At least for the boat hull application...

After shelving the project for some time, Dr. Hinton came to a major realization. The problem wasn’t that the formulation wasn’t right for the application; instead, the application wasn’t right for the formulation! Through extensive testing on different surfaces, Dr. Hinton discovered the product worked perfectly to add glossy, lustrous shine and impenetrable protection to surfaces around the home—especially hard surfaces that had pores or surface roughness, such as natural stone, stainless steel and plastic. Problem solved!
